Charming illustrated book, drawn and written by Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts
Watts, Charlie ~ Ode to a highflying Bird
First UK printing :Beat Publications Ltd, London : 1965
The First UK printing published by Beat Publications Ltd, London in 1965. This is Charlie Watts' moving and elegant tribute to his hero Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker. It is written in the style of a children's book and looks like one too. Watts tells a short and simple tale of a Bird who could 'whistle just great' - but 'could not lay off the bad seeds and rye drink.' With an image of Watts and printed signature to the back board. The work was republished in 1991; This is the very rare original version from Beat Publications. The original price label is bound into the front joint as issued. Two previous owner's have penned their names to the price label. No other inscriptions. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Small octavo. Original white boards, titles to covers in black, portrait of the author to rear cover, price label of 'Seven Shillings' tipped to the front free endpaper as issued. Light pushing and a little splitting at the upper spine tip with a little rubbing to the corners and light age related markings to the covers. No wrapper as issued. The book is now protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. Illustrations in colour throughout by the author. An increasingly elusive title.
