The First UK printing published by Country Life, UK in 1944. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with light pushing at the spine ends. Contemporary gift inscription to the front pastedown. Light toning to the text-block with a little offsetting to the blank end-papers. The lower front hinge is starting to ease. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. Some loss at the spine ends, corners and the upper front edge. A closed tear to the lower front flap fold and a little tape reinforcement to the spine head to the verso. The wrapper artwork remains striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The wrapper artwork and 10 B/W plates are by Pauline D. Baynes, the later illustrator of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. This early work was illustrated by Baynes whilst undertaking wartime work at the Admiralty in Bath and where she was able to gather a few commissions. This was her first for 'Country Life' and her first substantial book illustration. Very scarce - the first we have handled.
