Selvon is perhaps most famous for The Lonely Londoners, which was praised for its use of creolised English for narrative as well as dialogue. Turn Again Tiger was the sequel to his first novel A Brighter Sun, and continues the story of the title character, Tiger, and his wife Urmilla, young Trinidadians struggling to forge a life for themselves away from traditional Indian values. While the first work describes East Indians and Creoles in Trinidad, the second follows the protagonist on a journey to his homeland. For his contributions to Literature, Selvon received two Guggenheim Fellowships,an honorary doctorate from Warwick University, and honorary DLitt degree from the University of the West Indies. In 1969 he was awarded the Trinidad & Tobago Hummingbird Medal Gold for Literature, and in 1994 he was posthumously given the Chaconia Medal Gold for Literature. In 2012 he was honoured with a NALIS Lifetime Achievement Literary Award for his contributions to Trinidad and Tobago's literature.
