First UK Printing : Chatto & Windus, London: 1969
8vo., aqua linson boards gilt to spine; together in the unclipped pictorial dust wrapper (30s net) designed by Enid Marx; THE BOOK, aside from some spotting to the upper edge, and mild pushing to the spine ends, a near-fine and clean copy; in the very good plus DUST WRAPPER lightly toned along backstrip, some minor creasing to folds and spine ends, and a couple of very unobtrusive spots; faint evidence of price sticker having been removed from the front panel; a bright example. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. First English edition, after the original Italian (published 1966), complimented by a dust jacket designed by Enid Marx, the English painter and designer who worked for the Curwen Press, Chatto and Windus and Penguin Books over a long and prolific career. A Spiral of Mist is the story of the large and wealthy Sangermano family, thrown into crisis when the son, Fabrizio, shoots his wife while out on a hunt. The book won the Italian Strega Prize, comparable to the US Pulitzer, in the year of publication. Scarce in such condition.
