First Title In The Woodland Trilogy
Nichols, Beverley ~ The Tree That Sat Down (First UK Printing)
Jonathan Cape 1945
The First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1945.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD+ condition. For a book that was issued to confirm with war time uniform standards,it is in surprisingly nice condition.Usual ghosting to the spine and board edges. The green top-stain has faded in places but is still present.Light foxing to the text block. The silver titling is still bright.Apart from a '20p' penned price to the front end-paper,there are no other inscriptions. One very small brown mark to the front pastedown which is obscured by the wrapper front flap.A wonderful peacock motif to the front board.Charming illustrated end-papers.The WRAPPER is in GOOD+ or better condition having some chipping to the spine ends. Otherwise it is complete and is a little nicked and rubbed in places.Mild crease to the spine with a few punctate areas of loss. The lettering and design on the spine is lightly faded but still evident. The wrapper artwork is designed by ISOBEL and JOHN MORTON-SALE.The two wrapper cover designs are stunning and look very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The Book is profusely illustrated with B/W illustrations and a full colour frontispiece by the illustrators. The FIRST book in the acclaimed 'Woodland Trilogy' and incredibly scarce as a first UK edition in an unrestored state..A key children's title and as such collectible.
