A 2 volumes set. Both titles are the First UK printings published by Grant Richards in 1917 and 1918. First title : 'Modern War Paintings' - The BOOKS is in Very Good++ condition. Colour lithographic frontispiece and numerous monochrome plates. The book is in its original cloth backed boards with intact printed paper labels to the front board and spine. Some toning to the board edges and page edges with some offsetting to the front blank endpaper. No inscriptions or bookplates. The very scarce original printed WRAPPER is present and is in Very Good condition. The wrapper is notoriously fragile being a little chipped and with some edge-wear. Some tape repairs to the folds and edges on the verso which do not show through to the front. Second title : 'The Great war, Fourth Year' - The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition. Colour lithographic frontispiece and numerous monochrome plates. The book is in its original cloth backed boards with printed paper labels to the front board and spine (the spine label is chipped to the edges). Some toning to the board edges and page edges with some offsetting to the front blank endpaper. No inscriptions or bookplates. The very scarce original printed WRAPPER is present and is in Very Good condition. The wrapper is notoriously fragile being a little chipped and with some edge-wear. Some professional Japanese tissue repairs to the folds and edges on the verso which do not show through to the front. Both wrappers are protected in removable Brodart archival covers. Both titles are Signed by the artist in pencil under the frontispiece of each volume. ‘The Great War’ title also bears the pencilled ownership name of 'C.L. Underwood' to the front end paper and is dated ‘2.3.35’. This is the signature of Claude Leon Underwood who was more commonly known as the artist ‘Leon Underwood’. Two classic WW1 titles which are extremely scarce with such attributes. Housed within a custom solander slipcase with ties.
