The First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape, London in 1944. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just a hint of pushing and fading at the spine tips. The silver titling remains bright. Merest hint of rubbing at the lower corners. Light toning to the text-block. Free from inscriptions. A very light crease to the upper corner of some pages. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Some mild loss at the spine ends and the corners. Light edge-wear with a few small closed tears, nicks and a little rubbing to the folds. Mild fading and toning to the red colouring of the spine. Some light age related markings to the blank rear panel. The Hans Tisdall wrapper artwork remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. Signed (without dedication) by the author to the front blank end-paper in his customary tiny hand writing. The author's debut book of 25 tales of army life. Extremely scarce as a signed title.
