Lewis, C. Day ~ Dick Willoughby
Basil Blackwell - Oxford : 1933
The First UK Printing published by Basil Blackwell (Oxford) in 1933 (nd). The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. The cloth is lightly chafed at the extremities. Mild pushing at the spine ends. Gilt titling remains bright. The text block is spotted and there is also some light spotting to the pages throughout in places. The binding is a little tender at one gathering. A small previous bookseller sticker to the lower front pastedown and a previous owner's neat gift inscription to the the front blank endpaper. The full colour frontispiece is present and is very clean. The scarce WRAPPER is present and is price-clipped. It is in Very Good ++ condition. It is a little dust soiled and edge-worn with several short closed tears and a few small slivers of loss. The cover design repeats the frontispiece design. The wrapper design is by H.R. Millar and looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Millar has also contributed 8 full age B/W illustrations which are all present. The second volume of Blackwell's 'Tales of Action' series and C day Lewis' first novel only preceded by two collections of poetry. He would go to write a further children's novel 'The Otterbury Incident' some 15 years later. A very scarce title in the original wrapper with there having not been any listed at auction in the last 20 years. Collectible.
