LE CARRE, John; Alex KAYSER, Et Al ~ Granta 35. The Unbearable Peace; Of Bankers and Soldiers, [Etc.]. Signed by five of the contributors.
Granta, London: 1991.
8vo., colourful card wraps, featuring a repeating image of a soldier in purple to both covers; priced £5.99 to the lower cover; printed throughout with text and photographs in black and white; THE BOOK a near-fine copy, with just a touch of rubbing along the spine, and the odd mark. The wrapper is protected in a removable archival cover. Granta Magazine No. 35, featuring contributions from John Le Carre, John Berger, Jayne Anne Phillips, Nadine Gordimer and Alan Gurganus, all of whom have signed their names beside the title for each article. Granta was founded in 1889 by students at Cambridge University as a periodical of political and literary merit. In 1979 it became a literary quarterly, with this example issued in the Spring of 1991. This edition features 'The Unbearable Peace' a story by Le Carre about the Swiss, money, and democracy; John Berger's reflections about the inhabitants of a zoo in Switzerland; 'In Summer Camps' by Jayne Anne Phillips (later published as a novel); Nadine Gordimer's 'Some are Born to Sweet Delight', with themes of moral and racial issues in South Africa; and Allan Gurganus on a visit to an American Civil War battleground. Scarce with these attributes, particularly so with John Le Carre's signature.
