Lang, Andrew & Van Sandwyk, Charles (Illus.) ~ The Blue Fairy Book : Double Signed By Charles Van Sandwyk And Also Signed By The Model For ‘The Genie’ Illustration’
The Folio Society, London : 2003
The First UK printing published by The Folio Society, London in 2003. The Book is in near Fine condition and appears unread. A small area of fading of the blue top-stain adjacent to the spine. Housed in the publisher's original blue slipcase which has a few age related markings. The book has been Signed (without dedication) by the illustrator Charles Van Sandwyk to the half-title page. He has also signed his name below the plate on page 74 (the plate for 'Aladdin and his wonderful lamp' chapter). The model for the Genie in this illustration Kamerieli Sikuri Murray, has also signed his name below the same plate. This edition is profusely illustrated in colour by the Canadian artist and illustrator Charles Van Sandwyk, who created new illustrations for this title, including 16 full page colour plates and dozens of partial page line drawings. There is a new introduction by the author Joan Aiken. This is the first in the 13-volume series of newly illustrated 'Coloured Fairy Books' by the Folio Society. The first printing sold out almost immediately but was quickly reprinted. This 'Blue' volume contains fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, Madame d'Aulnoy, Arabian Nights, and Norwegian folktales. Arguably, it contains some of the best known fairy tales, such as 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood', 'Cinderella', 'Aladdin', 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Hansel and Gretel', and more. Andrew Lang is best known for these collections of fairy tales, and was an avid collector of folk and fairy tales. He was a Scottish poet, novelist, and literary critic. A very collectible copy with such attributes.
