Isak Dinesen / Karen Blixen ~ Seven Gothic Tales : With The Scarce ‘Evening Standard Book Of The Month’ Wraparound Band And Promotional Flyer
Putnam, London : 1934
The First UK edition published by Putnam, London in 1934. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with the publisher’s original plum boards and gilt titling. Some very faint spotting to the text block and light offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions and internally clean. The Rex Whistler designed WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition with only some mild edge-wear to the spine ends. It bears the correct price of ‘7s. 6d. net.’ to the lower front flap. Some light toning to the spine of the wrapper and the front flap. The wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The Rex Whistler coloured frontis replicates the wrapper design. The elusive ‘Evening Standard Book of the Month' wraparound promotional BAND is complete and has a hint of rubbing to the top edge of the spine portion. Loosely laid in is the very scarce ‘Evening Standard’ promotional Flyer promoting this title amongst its new books. The flyer measures 65 x 28 cm. It has been folded. The header decoration is by Kermode ('K'). The flyer exclaims ‘A Danish Genius: She Writes in English’. Karen Blixen's first collection of stories that feature centaurs, fauns, water deities along with ghostly long dead pirates and suspicious looking monkeys. The first copy that I have seen with this flyer or with this promotional band. A very sharp copy of the critically acclaimed ‘Seven Gothic Tales’ which is amongst the author's major works along with ‘Out of Africa’. Extremely scarce to find in this condition with such ephemera.
