Very scarce with the wrapper
Herring, Robert & Bawden, Edward (Illus.) ~ Adam and Evelyn at Kew or Revolt in the Gardens : With The Scarce Wrapper
Elkin Mathews & Marrot, London : 1930
The sole printing published by Elkin Mathews & Marrot, London in 1930. Number '650' of 1060 numbered copies (60 were for presentation). The BOOK is in near Fine condition and has been protected well by the rapper. Original quarter grey cloth over patterned paper boards, with green titling to the spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A hint of spotting to the text-block. Free from inscriptions. The scarce first issue WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. The design on this wrapper repeats the design on the boards. There was also a later wrapper which was issued, which was plain with printed text only. A small chip to the upper spine extending along the upper rear edge and a slither of loss to the lower spine. Some tiny rubs to the upper corners and some toning to the spine, otherwise the wrapper design appears very fresh. The printed paper label to the front panel is complete. The Edward Bawden wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book is illustrated by Edward Bawden with 13 coloured pochoir plates and 6 illustrations in text. Bawden also provides striking end-paper designs with aerial views of Kew Gardens and Kew Green. An exceptional copy of this scarce title. The nicest copy we have handled to date
