Heath's first (and arguably the finest), in a long series of cookery books written towards the middle of the twentieth century in collaboration with Edward Bawden's wonderfully enigmatic illustrations. A follow-up, 'More Good Food', was published the following year. With some of the recipes previously appearing in columns in The Manchester Guardian, The Morning Post and The News-Chronicle. Some of the illustrations were also taken by Bawden at the kitchens of The Horseshoe Tavern in London. Divided into monthly segments, Bawden asks only that a reader might give his recipes time ("Food that is worth eating cannot usually be flung together and dished up in a hurry") and willingness "to learn something of that graciousness of eating which has been lost or, rather, submerged since 1914". Recipes include 'Braised Duckling with Turnips', 'Banana Soufflé' and 'Lobster Pancakes'. Scarce as the first edition.
