8vo., green boards ruled in blind, lettered in gilt along spine with decorative borders to head and foot; upper edge green; in the seldom-found dustwrapper (7s. 6d. net) printed in black and green; THE BOOK a very good copy; text block lightly, end evenly, toned; mild pushing and sunning to spine; one small dent to upper edge of rear board resulting in miniscule nicks to the cloth; in the good plus DUST WRAPPER which has some overall shelf wear and toning to spine, with a couple of scratches and red marks to the head; chipped at edges, particularly the spine ends, and top of folds, resulting in some loss (none to text); a couple of closed tears to the upper edge (no more than 2.5cm). A collection of writings by John Burdon Sanderson Haldane, an British-Indian scientist whose fields of study included physiology, genetics, evolutionary biology, and mathematics, and who was one of the founders of neo-Darwinism. The essays collected here vary greatly in theme and content, and include a review of the writings of Bertrand Russell, chapters on birth control and ‘If Jesus Lived Today’, and a short work of fiction entitled ‘The Gold-Makers’, included here as “it is rather unlikely that I should ever write enough fiction to fill a volume”. Haldane is best known today for his article on the ‘primordial soup’ theory, and being one of the first scientists to suggest the idea of in-vitro fertilisation. He is also known for his work in human biology, having coined "clone" and "cloning". Scarce in first issue format.
