Mostly known for his Children’s fantasy books, Thursbitch was Garner’s seventh published novel, with the title taken directly from the valley in the Pennines of the same name. Drawing on the life of the real John Turner, whose stone can be found there with the inscription: HERE JOHN TURNER WAS CAST AWAY IN A HEAVY SNOWSTORM IN THE NIGHT IN OR ABOUT THE YEAR 1755 And on the other side THE PRINT OF A WOMAN'S SHOE WAS FOUND BY HIS SIDE WERE HE LAY DEAD, Garner weaves a mystery story set between the 18th century and the present day. Catherine Lockerbie for the Scotsman writes that “There is more meaning and worth in a single paragraph of Alan Garner than in much of the pale, thin stuff that passes for contemporary English fiction”. Uncommon signed.
