Scarce With The Wrapper
Freeman, C. Dennis & Cooper, Douglas : Ardizzone, Edward (Illus.) ~ The Road To Bordeaux : Scarce With The Wrapper
The Cresset Press, London : 1940
The First UK printing published by The Cresset Press, London in 1940. The BOOK is in near fine condition. A hint of pushing at the spine tips and a small bump to the lower rear corner. Top edge slightly dusty. Light offsetting to the map end-papers with a hint of spotting to the text-block. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition with some mild edge-wear, nicks, creasing and small closed tears in places. A little loss at the spine ends and corners. A mild vertical crease to the spine with some age related markings in places. The Ardizzone wrapper artwork remains striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Edward Ardizzone provides 6 full page B/W illustrations and the wrapper artwork. 'The book tells the story of two Englishmen who enlisted as ambulance drivers with the French Army on the eve of the crucial battle behind the Marne. It describes the conditions of life in Paris in the spring of 1940, and provides a fresh view of the crisis as it developed....' (wrapper blurb).A very elusive title to find with such attributes. Only the second copy that we have handled.
