Grant Richards, London : 1916
The First UK printing published by Grant Richards, London in 1916. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some light spotting to the prelims. The green top-stain is still present. Gold lettering to the spine and front cover remain very bright. The publisher's catalogue is present to the rear of the book. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Minor edge-wear with a little loss at the spine ends and some light age related markings and darkening. The coloured front panel illustration looks very striking in the removable brodart archival cover. The book has been inscribed by the artist Albert Rutherston to the front blank end-paper: 'To Norman, with apologies for this scribble, sign of the times'. The recipient was the artist Norman Wilkinson who was a British artist who was primarily a marine painter, but also an illustrator, poster artist, and wartime camoufleur. Wilkinson invented dazzle painting to protect merchant shipping during the First World War. Firbank's scarce second novel with only 500 copies issued. Albert Rutherston (formerly Rothenstein) contributes two B/W illustrations to the book. The frontis is reproduced in colour on the wrapper front panel to striking effect. Scarce with such attributes.
