A very modern interpretation of Carroll's classic tale, here illustrated by the English Pop Artist Peter Blake, best known for his sleeve design for the Beatles' 1967 album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. In the early 1970s, he had produced a set of watercolour paintings to illustrate this work, which appeared as a series of silkscreen prints. Here, they are produced alongside the original text. In 'Behind the Scenes' printed to the rear of this edition, Blake explains that it was the family of a Peter Gatacre, who owned a holiday home in Holland, that inspired his paintings. "Alice is Peter's daughter", he writes, "the Hatter is his son William Gatacre, Tweedledum and Tweedledee were his daughters Sophie and Amelia". "The problem is there's not a lot you can do", he continues modestly, "because Tenniel did them so well". The various images here show Alice picking up the King (modeled on a chess piece), Alice speaking to the anthropomorphisised roses, a glum-looking hatter somewhat reminiscent of Mick Jagger, and a grinning Humpty-Dumpty.
