Carr’s sixth novel, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in the year of publication. Carr had worked as an exchange teacher in South Dakota from 1938–1939, and again from 1956–1957. The Battle of Pollocks Crossing was his first novel, initially entitled Oh, My America, a quotation from John Donne. Based on his experiences in the city of Huron, it initially failed to find a publisher, and it was not until the 1980s that it was accepted by Viking. In it, Carr becomes George Gidner and Huron the fictional town of Palisades, with the plot set during the months leading up to the Wall Street Crash. Carr had previously reported that his years living in America were ones of great struggle, with his British salary converted into dollars pitifully inadequate to meet the American cost of living. A bright copy with a personal inscription.
