The First UK printing published by George Routledge & Sons Ltd., London in 1929. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. The publisher's original blue cloth lettered in gold at the spine, with a small gilt-stamped vignette to the upper board. Title page printed in black and red. With a frontispiece, sixteen pages of captioned plates and two maps. Mild pushing to the spine ends with a little splitting at the lower spine tip. Early rubbing to the lower corners. Some light spotting and toning to the text-block. One neat previous owner's penned name to the upper front blank end-paper. Some spotting to the prelims with the occasional light spotting to the extreme page edges in a few places. The WRAPPER is complete and is In Very Good+ condition. It is separated at the rear spine fold. Some loss to the spine ends and corners. Light edge-wear with a few age related markings and some toning to the spine. Small sticker to the lower spine : 'Including extra war costs 16 /- net'. The wrapper comes together well and remains very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Byron in his short life became probably the finest travel writer of his generation, his 'Road to Oxiana' often cited as the 20th century's greatest travel book. He almost single-handedly rescued the study of Byzantium from its neglect by the universities and dispelled the air of medieval superstition which prevailed until the publication of this book.
