Small 4to., original pictorial laminated boards showing a brown bear in a suit climbing out of a window; together in the repeat design wrapper; captioned frontis plus another 27 full-page illustrations by the author; The BOOK is a Very Good+ copy, some toning to the boards and the edges; a little rubbed and pushed at spine tips and edges; slight lean present. Internally very good, light offsetting to endpapers, minor finger markings and the odd spot the only defects; the Very Good++ WRAPPER evenly shelf worn, a little toned to the spine and folds with some small losses to the extremities, more-so at the spine tips just slightly affecting some text. One or two small tears, one tiny hole to front flap fold. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Signed (without dedication) by the author / illustrator in black ink to the front free endpaper. Burroughes was an artist, educated at the Slade School of Fine Art, who specialised in wood and linocuts, and produced illustrations for The Illustrated London News, as well as a series of posters for the London Underground. From the 1930s onwards, she wrote and illustrated a number of children's books, of which the present example was her first. Most focused on the theme of animals, and later publications included The Home the Moles Built (1939), Teddy, the Little Refuge Mouse, (1942) and The Pigs who Sailed Away (1944). Little Brown Bear follows Bruno, who plays truant away from his duck governess in order to play with his friends. Scarce with such attributes.
