The Scarce First Issue
Bridges, Robert Seymour ~ The Growth Of Love. A Poem In Twenty-Four Sonnets : The Scarce First Issue
Edward Bumpus, London : 1876
The first UK printing published by Edward Bumpus, London in 1876. The BOOK is in Very Good condition. Original publisher's printed paper wrappers, housed in a later custom blue cloth gate-fold case with the latter bearing the armorial bookplate of Oliver Brett. 28 pages. Extremities toned, chipping to spine, paper label residue to upper panel and a short tear to lower panel. Some splitting of the covers at the spine. Very occasional light dust-soiling and spotting. A rare survivor of the original first state of the first published work of poet (and future Poet Laureate) Robert Seymour Bridges (1844-1930). An indirect account of a love affair resulting from a tour of Italy, the romantic poem was later extended by Bridges from 24 to 79 sonnets for the two Daniel Press editions of 1889 and 1890 respectively. This scarce first issue was thought to have been published in very small numbers possibly less than 100 copies issued.
