Blunden, Edmund ~ The Waggoner and other Poems : The Scarce First Issue With The Wrapper
Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd, London : 1920
The First UK printing published by Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd, London in 1920. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. The First issue with original publisher's purple cloth with a printed paper label to the spine. Very slight pushing and fading to the extreme head and tail of the spine. Spare label tipped in to the rear end-paper as called for. Some offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and in Very Good++ condition. A little loss at the spine ends and upper corners. Some toning to the spine and the folds. A little light rubbing and age related markings in places. A small closed tear to the front upper spine fold. The wrapper presents very well in the removable Brodart archival cover. Of an edition of 500, 250 copies were bound in purple cloth for immediate issue, 100 sets of sheets were sent to NY for Knopf's American edition, and the remaining 150 bound up in green cloth later in 1920. Extremely uncommon in wrapper in either issue but more so, with this being the elusive first state. Blunden's first trade publication, 'The Waggoner' was issued with the encouragement and assistance of Siegfried Sassoon to whom Blunden had sent some of his work in his capacity as literary editor of the Daily Herald. Collectible.
