BARRY, Sebastian ~ Macker’s Garden. Inscribed by the author.
FIRST PRINTING. Irish Writer's Co-op, Dublin: 1982.
8vo., photographic wraps featuring an image by Jonathan Hession, printed in black and white; THE BOOK very good, a tight, clean copy internally, some discolouration to covers and sunning to backstrip, with some light spots to edges and endleaves. The book is protected in a removable mylar cover. First edition, first printing, issued only in wraps. This copy warmly inscribed by the author to Seamus Cashman 'with respect and gratitude' and dated 1983. The author's scarce first book. Born in Dublin in 1955, Barry went on to become an award-winning playwright, and two of his later novels (A Long, Long Way, 2005, and The Secret Scripture, 2008) were shortlisted for the Booker Prize. He was also longlisted for ' On Canaan's Side' in 2011. Barry's writings were characterised by Irish settings, politics, and conflict, but this present title represents his first foray into ficition, and a plot which follows five adolescent boys and their developing relationships. This copy was formerly in the possession of the poet and publisher Seamus Cashman, who founded the Irish literary publishing house Wolfhound Press in 1974.
