This, a comedy of manners set in a grand country house with a current of dark mystery running beneath the surface, is the only novel published in his lifetime. The author had a lifelong interest in the paranormal, dabbling in the investigation of hauntings and became a long-term member of the Society for Psychical Research and The Ghost Club. He received a British Fantasy Award and the World Fantasy Award for his work. A very scarce title in collectible condition.
